General Information About The Škoda Brand

Like the other luxury import auto brands we service, Škoda automobiles have a long and interesting history. Škoda is a proud Czech brand that has offered a lot of innovation to the world of vehicles. In fact, before becoming Škoda, the company was called Laurin & Klement. Laurin & Klement was founded in 1895 and began servicing and creating bikes. In fact, for a time they specialized in creating velocipedes, those old-timey, bike-style vehicles with one massive wheel and other small wheels.

Over time, their bicycles evolved into motorcycles, and by 1905 Laurin & Klement was producing automobiles. Laurin & Klement continued producing their vehicles and innovating the mechanics used within them all the way through World War 1. Then, following WWI, they were facing financial difficulties and sought out a partnership. They were then acquired by another Czech arms manufacturing company, and while names and business composition shifted, vehicles were manufactured and sold under the Škoda name and logo.

By the mid 1930s, Škoda had released a popular line of automobiles that propelled them to the most popular car manufacturer in what was then Czechoslovakia. They continued their success until World War 2, when Czechoslovakia was occupied. At that point the Škoda facilities were used for the to create vehicles and weapons through the course of the war.

The good news is that after the end of WW2, Škoda was able to return to creating consumer vehicles with success. There was a time between the 60s and late 80s where they fell behind competitors technologically, but were able to persevere. Then, in the 90s, they were acquired by Volkswagen which boosted the Škoda brand’s popularity and reputation.

After being acquired by Volkswagen, Škoda continued to produce more and expand their distribution. By 2011, Škoda and Volkswagen were celebrating their 20-year anniversary and shared success. Following the 20-year anniversary, Škoda has continued developing and releasing successful new vehicles on a regular schedule.
